Are of/ is of/ as of/ something of- you need to know

By seeing an example from a technology-related article in THE BUSINESS STANDARD I thought at that time that I have to write something about ARE OF, IS OF, AS OF, SOMETHING OF since these are so-so (মোটামুটি-Mutamuti) controversial and complex also.

ARE OF/ IS OF

  1. EX: We sell cheap food but we also make sure the food is of good quality.

Here’s a technique and that is noun A is of noun B means  Noun A has noun B. But it does not mean noun A is noun B.

Here, “of” can indicate “characteristic or distinctive”

“Is of”= has  the characteristic

So we can understand that the passage which is given on is like “ we sell cheap food but we also make sure the food has good quality”

2. EX: We and our doctors, however, are of the opinion.

From this example we understand that they have opinion.

NB: “ARE OF/ IS OF” here “are” and “is” depend on singular and plural sentence.

AS OF (On, at, From)

Used to demonstrate a period or date at which something starts or closures(ends).

  1. EX: Feeling pain as of(from) July
  2. EX: As of now, It’s difficult to tell in cancer.
  3. EX: We begin work as of Tuesday.

SOMETHING OF

  1. EX: He is something of an expert with math solving
  2. We have something of a problem here
  3. I am something of a graphic designer

Here” something of” is to some degree or used to make a  statement or definite or description.
